I have 2 different clients that have email spam filters, every day I get a complaint that someone on the staff got a spam email and what can I do about it. I constantly tell them, and everyone else, that for every spam email that gets to their inbox, there probably 1000 that didn’t.

I have had very good results with the Barracuda Spam Firewall appliance as a defense against spam. I  recommend anyone that is running their email in house have some sort of spam filter, and, as much as I like Open Source software, this is one I am willing to pay for. The appliance updates its self every few hours, and is very easy to setup and operate. The two clients that I have this appliance up and running for are both very pleased with its performance.

If you are a small company with just a few emails, I recommend you spend the money on a service like gmail. You can have email@yourdomain.com and have it operate just like gmail.  With this setup, you get the convenience of cloud based email with rock solid performance. This also gives you the advantage of having a native app for your Android device to read your email.
